Deafway
The main emphasis for this new website was to provide a way for deaf people, who use BSL (British Sign Language) as a first or preferred language, to access information via the internet.
The Signbytes element of the site enables information leaflets to be translated into BSL and be made available in both video and text based formats. The website is maintained by an internet accessed content management system which was a bespoke ground up development and was designed specifically for the solution required by Deafway.
This kind of solution had never before been successfully implemented on the internet or anywhere else within the world. In conjunction with a pilot group of people from Lancashire, Orbit lent its technical expertise to address and overcome a multitude of issues which had made an information resource of this type impossible to develop before this point.
Using broadband and the latest video streaming technologies Orbit has been able to put in place a solution that has now placed a worldwide benchmark for providing information
upon the internet for deaf people. This fully scaleable solution will make the addition of the many varied types of information a simple and highly cost effective process for a charity based organisation like Deafway.
