ADSL
Introduction
DSL (digital subscriber line) is a proven technology that provides secure, reliable, high-speed, Internet access and runs over the existing standard copper telephone lines wired to most organisations and businesses. Unlike traditional Dial Up connections such as analogue modems and ISDN, DSL delivers continuous, "always on" access.
The variations among DSLs are distance, speed, and other factors derived from these, such as location of network termination and cost. Line length is a critical factor for DSL services. Most types of DSL are literally “last mile” technologies-the copper wiring between the telephone exchange and user must be no more than 4 kilometres long. VDSL requires the shortest length, while IDSL allows the longest.
When your DSL service is connected to the Internet, e-mail, multimedia-rich websites and other online applications are immediately available to you and can be downloaded at speeds far greater than analogue modems and ISDN. In fact, with DSL service, customers can benefit from Internet speeds that are up to 12 times faster than a typical ISDN connection and 25 times faster than a traditional 56 Kbps modem.
The speed and cost effectiveness of DSL make this technology extremely attractive to small to mid-sized businesses, small office/home office (SOHO) workers, companies with branch offices, who wish to move away from analogue modems and ISDN.
