Google Sitemaps
Google first introduced the Sitemaps facility in June 2005. This was created to help webmasters tell Google exactly what pages were available to craw within there website. This has proven to be very popular and since its release both MSN and Yahoo have also announced joint support for the sitemaps initiative.
How does Google Sitemaps work?
Orbits web promotion specialists generate a site map document in .xml format that needs to be placed within the root directory of your site. This can be done via FTP by us directly, or the file(s) can be e-mailed to a third party development team. Once the file(s) have been uploaded into the root directory of your site we inform Google of its location, Google can then gain access to a full list of URL’s form your website.
Can I block pages I don’t want to appear in the Google Index?
If there are pages you feel do not need to be listed with Google then all you need to do is e-mail our web promotion team with a list of the specific pages you wish to be excluded from the index and we will ensure they are not added to the sitemap.xml file.
Are there any limits to the number of URL’s that can be added to a single sitemap file?
If you have a large site (over 50,000 pages) then you will need multiple sitemap files. This can be done with a small modification to the process and will still ensure that all specified URL’s are added to Googles index.
Will I need to create separate sitemap files for sub domains?
Yes. Sub domains will need separate sitemap files submitting to Google. However there is currently no limit to the number of .xml files that can be added to a single domain.
